Deslenguadas ensemble performance by Koaxula

“Deslenguadas”, meaning “those whose tongue has been cut out”, is a multidisciplinary performance created by Koaxula, the creative duo of Natalia Escobar and Daniela Huerta. Drawing on Mesoamerican serpent deities including Coatlicue and Tlazoltéotl, the work explores decolonising feminine archetypes and the darker, instinctive aspects of the feminine.

Ilhem was invited to co-create the piece as vocalist and vocal director during a residency at Centro Cultural Digital in Mexico City. She developed and performed the vocal dimension of the work alongside six dancers, contributing to its exploration of collective voice, ritual and suppressed forms of expression. She performed live with the collective at Centro Cultural Digital in Mexico City, Silent Green in Berlin and MUTEK Mexico.
